{"id":1472,"date":"2021-04-29T15:42:53","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T15:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/folksyblues.com\/?page_id=1472"},"modified":"2021-04-29T15:42:53","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T15:42:53","slug":"richard-johnston","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/folksyblues.com\/?page_id=1472","title":{"rendered":"Richard Johnston"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Richard Wayne Johnston<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0country blues\u00a0musician.\u00a0In 2001 he won the\u00a0Blues Foundation&#8217;s\u00a0International Blues Challenge\u00a0and its\u00a0Albert King Award\u00a0for most promising blues guitarist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His work as a\u00a0street musician\u00a0on\u00a0Beale Street\u00a0in\u00a0Memphis, Tennessee, was documented in the\u00a0Alabama PBS\u00a0film\u00a0<em>Richard Johnston: Hill Country Troubadour<\/em>. The film, directed by Max Shores, featured Johnston singing and playing his\u00a0Lowebow\u00a0cigar box guitar. It won first place in the professional documentary film category at the 2007 George Lindsey\/UNA Film Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnston studied under blues artists including\u00a0R.L. Burnside,\u00a0Junior Kimbrough\u00a0and\u00a0Jessie Mae Hemphill. His first album,\u00a0<em>Foot Hill Stomp<\/em>\u00a0(2002), featured Hemphill on vocals and tambourine, with assistance from R.L. Burnside&#8217;s grandson,\u00a0Cedric Burnside, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His second album,\u00a0<em>Official Bootleg #1<\/em>\u00a0(2004), was assisted by Hemphill, Cedric Burnside, and other artists.
