He was the father of the blues musician\u00a0Sam Carr. Nighthawk was inducted into the\u00a0Blues Hall of Fame\u00a0in 1983. McCollum was born in\u00a0Helena<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helena,_Arkansas\">, <\/a>Arkansas.\u00a0He left home at an early age and became a busking musician. After a period traveling through southern\u00a0Mississippi, he settled for a time in\u00a0Memphis, Tennessee, where he played with local orchestras and musicians, such as the\u00a0Memphis Jug Band.
