{"id":1357,"date":"2021-04-21T11:55:19","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T11:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/folksyblues.com\/?page_id=1357"},"modified":"2021-04-21T11:55:19","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T11:55:19","slug":"robert-belfour","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/folksyblues.com\/?page_id=1357","title":{"rendered":"Robert Belfour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Robert &#8221;Wolfman&#8221; Belfour<\/strong>&nbsp;(September 11, 1940 \u2013 February 24, 2015) was an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">American<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blues\">blues<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musician\">musician<\/a>. He was born in Red Banks,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mississippi\">Mississippi<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Belfour#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>When he was a child, his father, Grant Belfour, taught him to play the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guitar\">guitar<\/a>, and he continued his tutelage in the blues from the musicians&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otha_Turner\">Otha Turner<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R._L._Burnside\">R. L. Burnside<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Junior_Kimbrough\">Junior Kimbrough<\/a>. Kimbrough, in particular, had a profound influence on him. His music was rooted in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hill_country_blues\">Mississippi hill country traditions<\/a>, in contrast to Delta blues. His playing was characterized by a percussive attack and alternate tunings.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Belfour#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Belfour was thirteen, his father died, and music was relegated to what free time he had, as his energy went to helping his mother provide for the family. In 1959, he married Noreen Norman and moved to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memphis,_Tennessee\">Memphis, Tennessee<\/a>, where he worked in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Construction\">construction<\/a>&nbsp;for the next 35 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1980s, Belfour began playing on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beale_Street\">Beale Street<\/a>. Eight of his songs are included on the musicologist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Evans_(musicologist)\">David Evans<\/a>&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compilation_album\">compilation album<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Spirit Lives On: Deep South Country Blues and Spirituals in the 1990s<\/em>, released by the German Hot Fox label in 1994. This led Belfour to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fat_Possum_Records\">Fat Possum Records<\/a>&nbsp;and record his first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Album\">album<\/a>,&nbsp;<em>What&#8217;s Wrong With You<\/em>, released in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album&nbsp;<em>Pushin&#8217;
